#TBT to Some Vintage '86 Larson

#TBT to this vintage '86 Larson merlot I found in the old wine cellar. Delicious!
It had some nutty hints of pomegranate pistachio, along with a pleasantly surprising back-tingle of lemon zest.
I should be a sommelier...

The Power of Saying 'No'

If you're constantly prospecting and adding value to your clients' lives--in other words, as you ascend to agent superstardom in the real estate or insurance industries--you'll reach a point where there are more people vying for your services than you can handle.

This means you'll have more prospects than time--a great problem to have.
Here's the thing, though:

your time and energy are both finite.

As your client list expands, so will your options--including your option to say 'no' to potential clients.

If you've established yourself in your niche market and created a reputation for yourself, odds are good that you have some products that are more expensive than others.

As time goes on, you may want to do away completely with offering lower end products, even if they bring in some revenue. Why? Because the time you'll save by saying 'no' to selling these products and the clients who buy them will become more valuable than the little revenue those products once brought to you.

This discerning eye for efficiency is one of the most important skills to hone as your business grows.

Real Estate Education: Online or Live–Fort Myers Real Estate School

Slowly but surely, certain sectors of the economy are moving their business onto the internet. Likewise, education is making the transition online.
That means we're entering a time when we have the potential to live out our 12-year-old self’s greatest dream:

we can stay in our pajamas and go to school in bed.

This freedom can be especially useful for adults looking to enter an industry like real estate and can’t make it to live classes.
However, before you jump right into online education assuming it’s right for you, you may want to familiarize yourself with how it works and how it’s different from live education.
Real estate education live or online

1. Convenience

Online

There’s no doubt that the convenience of online education is one of its most alluring qualities; it’s difficult to incorporate school of any kind into your already jam-packed schedule.
Online classes can allow you to more easily shoehorn an education into your life.
Or maybe you simply don’t want to spend gas money and travel time commuting to a classroom.
If that’s the case, then online education might be right for you.

Consider this: although online classes seem like a time-saver in the short term, they can be more expensive in the long run if you're unable to pass the state exam due to the less interactive nature of online education.

Live

If you live close to a real estate education provider, then time and gas money spent traveling might be a non-factor for you.
Perhaps your schedule is more flexible, allowing you to enjoy live education without feeling overwhelmed, in which case it might be better to go to live classes.

2. Individual Attention

Online

Although some online classes at a university, for example, will allow video interaction between students and instructors, most real estate schools will not offer such comprehensive online education packages.
Online courses generally consist of videos, images, texts, and quizzes.

Live

Live classes, on the other hand, allow you to interact face-to-face with an instructor and fellow students.
Not only is this a more conducive environment for learning, but it also provides an excellent opportunity to network in your new industry.

3. Comfort

Online

If you want to, you can take online classes out by the pool.
pool laptop computer
Please don't leave your computer this close to the pool...
That freedom is a great benefit, for sure. Just keep in mind that without the social pressure of fellow classmates, you may be inclined to succumb to distraction.

Live

Depending on how extraverted you are, being surrounded by people may be more comfortable for you.
As a real estate agent, you’ll need to thrive on social interactions, as you’ll be meeting and connecting with people all the time.
Meeting people at class is as good a time to start as any.

If you’re considering taking online real estate courses because you prefer not to be in a classroom full of people, then perhaps the social nature of real estate doesn’t jibe with your personality.

The Long Way is the Shortcut

Have you ever purchased something cheap to save money only to replace it after just a few uses?

You probably bought the cheap item because you didn’t want to (or couldn't) spend more money on its more expensive counterpart. You find yourself buying the $20 cotton jeans that wear out after a year rather than the $45 denim jeans that would last you 5 years.

Why do we do it? Sometimes it's because we don’t have the money to buy more high quality items.

Other times, though, we’re looking for the quick solution—the shortcut.

That’s why I cringe when I see articles like this: https://www.zillow.com/blog/blue-kitchens-sell-for-more-216631/

It’s a breakdown of which colors in which rooms raise your home value and by how much. (Periwinkle blue adds $5,440 to home value? Who knew?!)

So what are you meant to do with this information about paint colors? I agree, it's tempting to share this as viable information—a simple change in paint color seems like an easy shortcut to more money—but there are so many X factors we don't know.

Most importantly, do these more profitable color schemes translate to Southwest Florida, where earth tones dominate?

If you followed this one-size-fits-all shortcut for paint colors, you might spend more time and money in the long run than if you put in the real work.

The same way that buying cheaply made clothes isn’t an efficient way to spend money, trying to improve your sales with a panacea is usually less efficient than putting in the work.

Holding your business together with a series of short cuts is as sustainable as buying cheaply made clothes—you’ll wake up one day and the soles of your shoes will be flopping off like the lapping tongue of a dog and your pants will bust at the seams like a plumber.

Take the long road—it’s the only sustainable route you have.

Common Misconceptions about Life Insurance

Many people don’t realize that life insurance can be one of the best financial purchases they make.

Life insurance offers a level financial and emotional security that many other investments can't touch.

Yet many people still don’t get life insurance. If you have a better understanding of why your clients hesitate to make this important purchase, you’ll be better equipped to help quell their objections.
common misconceptions about life insurance
The death benefits that life insurance pays out can be one of the most important tools a family has to cover funeral and other end of life expenses.
Although these one-time expenses may be one of the smaller benefits of life insurance, yet covering funeral and burial costs is one of the main reasons Americans purchase life insurance.
Even clients who see life insurance as a means to leave inheritance for their children or as a way to supplement income in retirement may not appreciate the potential of life insurance.

Clients might be deterred by what they view as relatively low yields for life insurance compared to other potential investments.

One of the most commonly cited reasons why people don’t buy life insurance is that they have other investment priorities.
Therefore, it’s important for you to adequately educate your clients about your life insurance products’ benefits. For example, that life insurance can help take care of their family in the future by compensating for the lost income after passing.
It may be that clients simply don't want to impact their monthly expenses.
If you let them know about potential premium financing, they may be able to finance their life insurance premiums without taking a significant hit on their liquid capital.
This is an especially important option for clients who may want invest their money in other asset classes.
With a better understanding of your clients’ thought process, you may be able to better assuage their nerves when considering an investment in life insurance.

#TBT to the Mysterious Construction Guy with the Golden Arm

This #ThrowbackThursday goes back just a few years to 2015, when we expanded our offices into “The Crow’s Nest” on the second level of Royal Palm Square in Fort Myers.
Our mom, LarsonEd’s resident interior decorator, was running errands up and down between our main offices on the ground level and the upstairs Crow’s Nest, which is on the other side of the Royal Palm Square complex.
Before one of her trips downstairs, co-owner Dave Larson said, “Mom, can you grab me a few sugar packets for my tea while you’re in the main office?”
Being the good mom that she is, she agreed, proceeding to grab a handful of packets from the main office kitchen, securing them into a compact package with a rubber band, and walking outside toward the open window of Dave’s second-floor office.
Now, mom wanted to make things a little interesting, so she said screw it to hand-delivering the sugar package to Dave, and instead opted for throwing it up through the narrow opening of his window.
She immediately enlisted the help of a husky construction guy wearing a white tank top.
“Hey,” she said as he walked past, “can you throw this sugar packet through that window?”
He stopped. The guy looked at Mom, looked up at the window, looked back at her, and wordlessly grabbed the sugar package to line up the shot.
The opening from ground level.

The opening from Dave's office.
It was clear from the outset that this wasn’t Construction Guy’s first rodeo. With eyes fixed on the second-floor window, he glided to the side in search of an optimum angle, sizing up the opening like a sniper lining up his target.
After finding his desired shot, Construction Guy brought his arm back and in one fluid motion whipped the sugar package forward, sending the precious cargo sailing perfectly through the middle of the narrow window opening.
Mom and Construction Guy heard a holler of excitement from Dave’s office. Of course the throw itself was enough cause for celebration, but the whoops were slightly more emphatic than expected.
It was Dave and our dad, Rick. “We got it!” they called down.
It turns out that as those two sat speaking in Dave’s office, Dad just happened to see the sugar package flying in through the window like a lost dove. Being the natural athlete that he is, Dad had reached up in a moment inspired by pure instinct and snatched the sugar package out of the air.
Dad came to the window and explained what had happened. Outside on ground level the construction guy walked away laughing, having never said a word to anybody.
We salute you, mysterious Construction Guy. Dave’s tea that day tasted just a little bit sweeter thanks to your throwing prowess.
Do any of you have a connection to the Southwest Florida Historical Society? We need to get in touch with them about putting up a commemorative plaque or maybe even a statue of the construction guy with the golden arm.
